Okay, fellow Shinkai fans, get ready to freak out a little (or a lot)! As someone whose anime journey completely changed thanks to “Your Name” (seriously, that movie hit me hard during COVID), and who still gets chills thinking about “Weathering with You“, the news about Makoto Shinkai’s next project has me buzzing. As an animator who’s totally obsessed with how things look, I’m, like, ridiculously excited. Seriously!
What’s the Buzz?
Shinkai himself tossed in a small New Year’s gift on X (Twitter)- he devoted all of 2024 to working hard on his next movie! He even hinted that he and his team are building “a new world that no one has ever seen before.” Cue those collective gasps from the fandom! He said they would share something about this next movie in 2025! However, no confirmed release date, but hey, we’ll take what we can get, right?
Knowing Shinkai, this will likely be another original story, which is precisely what makes his work so unique.

Sci-Fi Shinkai?!
Hold on to your hats, folks, because this rumor is WILD. Word on the street (okay, from the internet grapevine) is that Shinkai might be diving into SCIENCE FICTION! Okay, so picture this: Shinkai, who usually makes movies about love, legends, or big disasters, suddenly makes a movie set way in the future! It would be super different from what we’re used to. But, if anyone can still make us feel all the feels, even in a sci-fi world, it’s definitely him.
AND There’s More!
Okay, we’re all hyped for any news surging around the upcoming movie, right? Well, this cool stuff would behind us. Buckle up for the upcoming live-action adaptation of “5 Centimeters per Second” which will come out in Fall 2025. That’s a high whammy of experience from Shinkai’s universe! So get ready to modify your calendars and put a huge circle over Fall 2025!
The Anticipation is Real
Shinkai has made movies like:
- The Garden of Words (2013)
- Your Name (2016)
- Weathering with You (2019)
- Suzume (2022)
Okay, so this person is super talented at making movies that look amazing and also make you feel all sorts of emotions. Because of that, everyone’s really excited about their next project! While we’re waiting, it might be fun to watch their older movies again, or maybe get excited about the new live-action version of “5 Centimeters per Second“!
Shinkai, Take My Money!
As a massive Shinkai fan – and someone who works as an animator, no less! – I’m ridiculously excited about his upcoming movie. It’s more than just the beautiful animation; it’s how deeply his stories connect with you, you know? I’m completely confident this next one will be another unforgettable work of art that will stay with us for a long time.
